Urolithin A is produced when gut microbes break down ellagitannins, polyphenols concentrated in pomegranate, walnuts and certain berries. Its headline mechanism is mitophagy: it appears to stimulate the cell's recycling of aged, underperforming mitochondria, making room for healthier ones. Because mitochondrial decline is a recognised feature of ageing muscle, a compound that nudges this housekeeping pathway is a reasonable candidate to study for muscle and cellular health.

The core rationale: you may not make much yourself

Here is the buying logic. Producing urolithin A depends on having the right gut bacteria, and only a minority of people appear to convert dietary ellagitannins into it efficiently. We are deliberately not putting a precise percentage on that — the figure varies between studies, populations and measurement methods, and a clean, agreed number does not exist. The honest version is directional: many people are poor producers, and for them a standardised supplement bypasses an unreliable internal step. The first-in-human study established that oral urolithin A is safe, bioavailable and induces a molecular signature of improved mitochondrial and cellular health.[1] A later randomised clinical trial in older adults, published in JAMA Network Open, reported improvements in muscle endurance and mitochondrial biomarkers with supplementation.[2] These are meaningful, controlled human results — but the effects are best described as modest and measured, not transformative, and they centre on endurance and biomarkers rather than large gains in strength or performance.

Much of the human urolithin A literature is company-associated: the foundational trials involved authors affiliated with Amazentis, the company behind the Timeline/Mitopure brand.[1] That does not make the findings wrong — the studies are peer-reviewed and the safety data is reassuring — but industry-linked research warrants a more cautious read and independent replication before firm conclusions. We would rather tell you this directly than let a glossy "clinically studied" label do the talking.

How to choose: Mitopure vs generic urolithin A

Practically, the market splits into the branded, patented form (Mitopure by Timeline), which supplies a directly bioavailable dose standardised to the material used in the trials, and cheaper generic urolithin A from various suppliers, where standardisation and testing are less certain. The branded product is what the published evidence was actually built on; the generics rely on the assumption that the molecule is the molecule.
